Shine a Light, Save a Life: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the U.K.  In 2008, there were 48,034 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the UK: 47,693 (over 99%) in women and 341 (less than 1%) in men. The risk of breast cancer is strongly affiliated with age with 81% of cases appearing in women over the age of 50.

October marks itself as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, where all things are turned pink in aid to shine a light on the important research that needs to be carried out to beat the disease.

I know a few individuals that have been affected by Cancer one in Particular is my partner’s cousin Alfrida who was 12 when she passed away from Leukemia. Alfrida’s body rejected her Stem Cell Treatment and slowly started to shut down, her body was too weak and couldn’t fight a viral infection. Alfrida was full of life and had her whole life ahead of her, a popular well liked girl who loved JLS :p. I remember after weeks of being fed through an IV the Dr said she was allowed to eat whatever she wanted, she of course requested Mcdonald’s. Everyone sat there watching her enjoy her Burger ooooing and aahhhing pretending they wanted a bite, she was so excited to be able to eat what she wanted, I think that was the last time everyone saw her smile and laugh before she deteriorated.

Brands from all over are doing there bit for to raise awareness for Cancer, throughout the month ill be posting up ways that you can help through either donating or purchasing items that donate a percentage to the cause.

Shine a light, save a life 🙂
